The drive leaves Chambéry Airport on the A43 and runs the length of the Maurienne valley to Modane, then crosses into Italy through the Fréjus tunnel. On the Italian side the A32 drops down to Oulx, where the SS24 turns back west through Cesana Torinese for the final climb to the pass.
Oulx is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Montgenèvre takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
Montgenèvre sits on the border at 1,860 m, so the village is reached from the Italian side and Briançon lies about 12 km further down the N94 inside France.
