The drive leaves Chambéry Airport on the A43 up the Maurienne valley to Modane and through the Fréjus tunnel, returning to France over the Montgenèvre pass into Briançon. From Briançon the N94 runs south down the Durance valley through Saint-Crépin to Guillestre, which is the junction for Risoul and the Queyras.
Guillestre is where the valley road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Risoul on the D902 takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
