The drive leaves Chambéry Airport on the A43, joins the A48 towards Grenoble and picks up the N85 and then the N91 on the east side of the city. From there the road follows the Romanche valley through Vizille and Le Bourg-d’Oisans before climbing past La Grave towards the Col du Lautaret.
The Lautaret, at 2,058 m, is the high point of the journey and the place where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The descent on the far side runs straight into the Guisane valley, so Le Monêtier-les-Bains, La Salle-les-Alpes and Chantemerle — the villages that make up Serre Chevalier — are reached before Briançon rather than after it.
The N91 is a main road maintained through the winter, but the last hour is mountain driving and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters. The Col du Galibier, which branches off at the Lautaret and gives the short summer link across to the Maurienne, is closed from late October until late May, so there is no shortcut over the top in ski season. The route stays in France throughout and involves no border crossing and no tunnel.
