Route overview
Sestriere doesn’t sit on a direct line from Geneva. The working approach runs south past Chambéry and onto the A43 up the Maurienne valley, through the Fréjus road tunnel to Bardonecchia, then down the A32 to Oulx and up the SS23 for the final climb to Sestriere. The tunnel is tolled and open year-round, which is why this is the routing used through the winter. The Col de Montgenèvre above Briançon is the French-side alternative, shorter on the map but dependent on the pass being clear. Either way it’s a genuinely long drive from Geneva, longer than the equivalent run from Grenoble itself, simply because of where the two airports sit relative to the border.
