The Lyon Airport to Crans-Montana route in detail
The drive leaves Lyon–Saint-Exupéry on the A43 towards Chambéry, picks up the A41 north past Annecy and crosses into Switzerland at Bardonnex, south of Geneva. From there the A1 skirts the city and runs the length of Lake Geneva to Villeneuve, where the A9 turns inland and climbs the Rhône valley.
It is a long transfer and most of it is motorway, which is what makes it predictable. The variable part is the Bardonnex border crossing and the stretch around Geneva, both of which back up on peak Saturdays in the ski season.
The last stage leaves the A9 at Sierre and climbs the switchbacks to the Haut-Plateau, the sunny terrace above the Rhône valley where Crans-Montana sits at 1,500 m. Crans-Montana has full road access and we drive you to the door. The climb from Sierre is short but steep, gaining almost 1,000 m in a handful of kilometres, and it is the part of the journey where winter tyres earn their keep.
Why fly to Lyon Airport for a Swiss resort?
Geneva is the obvious airport for the Valais, and geographically it is the closest. But it is not always the cheapest or the most convenient. Flights into Lyon–Saint-Exupéry Airport (LYS) are often better priced, the schedules suit some UK and northern European departure airports better, and the arrivals hall is a great deal calmer on a February Saturday than Geneva’s is.
We should be straight with you about one thing: we do not run transfers from Geneva into Switzerland. Our Swiss routes start from the French airports — Lyon Airport, and our other two French bases — because that is where our vehicles and drivers are. So this page is for you if you are already flying into Lyon Airport, or if the fare difference makes it worth the extra road time.
And the road time is real: 335 km. We would rather you weighed that before booking than discovered it on the day.
Crossing into Switzerland — what it means for your transfer
This is a cross-border transfer, and three things follow from that. None of them are your problem on the day, but it is worth knowing what we handle.
- Motorway vignette. Every vehicle using a Swiss motorway must display an annual vignette, currently CHF 40. Our vehicles carry it as standard — you will never be asked to contribute to it.
- Border formalities. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but outside the EU customs union, so passport checks are rare while customs spot-checks at Bardonnex do happen. Carry your passport or national ID card and the crossing is a formality.
- Winter equipment. Swiss law does not impose the blanket chain rule that the French Loi Montagne does, but a driver who reaches a mountain road unequipped is liable for any obstruction they cause. Our vehicles run winter tyres and carry chains, which is what the final climb to Crans-Montana actually needs.
You are also charged in euros at a price fixed when you book. There is no Swiss franc surcharge and no exchange-rate adjustment on arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the transfer from Lyon Airport to Crans-Montana?
Around 3h 43min for 335 km in normal conditions. Allow longer on peak Saturdays, when the Bardonnex border crossing and the Geneva ring both slow down, and in heavy snow on the final climb.
How much does a Lyon Airport to Crans-Montana transfer cost?
From €61.13 per person — a private vehicle for up to 8 passengers starts from €489 at the weekday rate for the 335 km journey. The price is calculated on the real road distance to your exact address; Saturday and peak dates are priced higher. Get your exact quote in 2 minutes through our booking form.
Where exactly do you drop me in Crans-Montana?
Straight to your address. Crans-Montana is not car-free, so the driver takes you to the door of your hotel, chalet or apartment, whether you are staying on the Crans side or the Montana side.
Do I need a Swiss motorway vignette or Swiss francs?
Neither. Our vehicles carry the annual Swiss vignette, and you are charged in euros at the price fixed when you book. Bring your passport or national ID card for the border — that is the only document the journey needs.
Is the transfer private?
Yes. The vehicle is yours alone, with no shared stops and no waiting for other passengers. On a 3h 43min drive that matters more than it does on a short one.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Your flight is tracked and the driver adjusts to the actual landing time, at no extra charge. You do not need to rebook or call ahead.
