From Cluses the D902 climbs through Châtillon-sur-Cluses to Taninges, where the D907 branches east up the Giffre valley through Verchaix to Samoëns. It is a single mountain road serving the whole valley, so a slow vehicle ahead sets the pace for everyone behind it.
Cluses is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Samoëns takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
