The journey begins with the descent from Verbier — the hairpins down to Le Châble and the Val de Bagnes out to Martigny, where the A9 heads west down the Rhône valley to Villeneuve.

From Villeneuve the motorway runs the length of Lake Geneva, skirts the city on the A1 and leaves Switzerland at the Bardonnex crossing. The French side is the A41 south past Annecy, then the A43 west to Lyon–Saint-Exupéry.
