The drive leaves Lyon Airport on the A48 to Grenoble, then the D1091 up the Romanche valley and over the Col du Lautaret. The Serre Chevalier valley lies between the col and Briançon, so the resort villages are reached on the way down rather than by climbing out of the town.
The Col du Lautaret is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. Coming down from the col you reach Le Monêtier-les-Bains first, then Villeneuve and Chantemerle strung along the valley floor towards Briançon. The descent takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions, and it is the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
