The drive leaves Chambéry Airport on the A43 up the Maurienne valley to Modane and through the Fréjus tunnel, returning to France over the Montgenèvre pass into Briançon. From Briançon the N94 runs south down the Durance valley through Guillestre to Embrun.
Embrun is where the valley road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there through Baratier up to Les Orres on the D40 takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
The winter routing crosses into Italy through the Fréjus tunnel and returns to France over the Montgenèvre pass, because the direct French road over the Col du Galibier is closed from late October until late May. Carry a passport or national ID card. The tunnel toll is included in the price quoted.

Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. The Montgenèvre pass is cleared as a main road and stays open through the winter, but at just over 1,850 m it is a genuine mountain crossing and slows to a crawl in heavy snowfall. The Col du Galibier, which would otherwise link the Maurienne directly to Briançon, is shut from late October until late May, which is why the route uses the tunnel. Satellite navigation will sometimes route over cols that are closed all winter — the Col d’Izoard and the Col Agnel among them. Drivers who run these roads daily do not follow a screen into them.
