The drive leaves Chambéry Airport on the A43 east and the N90 up the Tarentaise valley. At Aigueblanche, short of Moûtiers, the road turns off and climbs the Vallée du Morel through Les Avanchers to Valmorel. That junction is where traffic for Valmorel leaves the main Tarentaise flow heading on towards Moûtiers and the Three Valleys.
Aigueblanche is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Valmorel takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
