The Grenoble Airport to Châtel route in detail
The drive leaves Grenoble Airport on the motorway north past Chambéry and Annecy towards Geneva, then runs east along the south shore of Lake Geneva to Thonon-les-Bains, where it turns off onto the D902. From Thonon the D902 climbs into the Vallée d’Abondance, through Abondance and La Chapelle-d’Abondance. It is a single mountain road serving the whole valley, so a slow vehicle ahead sets the pace for everyone behind it.
Thonon-les-Bains is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Châtel takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
Winter driving on this route
Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. Our vehicles run on winter tyres with chains carried as standard, so the driver fits them where the road demands it instead of joining the queue in Abondance.
Chains are needed on the D902 above Thonon more often than most visitors expect, and fitting them adds ten to fifteen minutes to the journey. Satellite navigation will sometimes route over cols that are closed all winter — the Col du Corbier and the Col de la Joux Plane among them. Drivers who run these roads daily do not follow a screen into them. The Pas de Morgins above Châtel crosses into Switzerland and is not part of the approach from the French side.
