The drive leaves Geneva Airport on the A40 — the Autoroute Blanche — which runs south-east through the Arve valley towards Chamonix and the Mont Blanc massif. There is effectively one road in. The A40 is the only motorway into this valley, so peak-Saturday traffic has nowhere else to disperse to and the queue builds on the motorway itself rather than in a town. Traffic for Megève and Combloux leaves at Sallanches, junction 20; Chamonix-bound vehicles stay on to the end of the motorway.

Le Fayet is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Chamonix takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.

Winter driving on this route

Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. Our vehicles run on winter tyres with chains carried as standard, so the driver fits them where the road demands it instead of joining the queue at the foot of the climb.

The A40 is cleared and gritted continuously and stays open in heavy snow, though the limit drops from 130 km/h to 110 and, in poor visibility, to 90 or 70. The exposed section is the climb after the motorway ends. Satellite navigation will sometimes route over cols that are closed all winter — the Col de la Madeleine, Col de l’Iseran, Cormet de Roselend and Col du Petit-Saint-Bernard among them. Drivers who run these roads daily do not follow a screen into them.

The fast road runs as far as Le Fayet. From there the climb to Chamonix takes 20 to 40 minutes, and that final section is the part most affected by snow and weekend traffic.
