The drive leaves Geneva Airport on the A40 towards Chamonix as far as the Cluses and Scionzier exits, leaving the motorway there for the D902. From Cluses the D902 — part of the Route des Grandes Alpes — climbs through Châtillon-sur-Cluses, Taninges and Les Gets to Morzine, from where the road climbs again in hairpins to the Avoriaz car parks. It is a single mountain road serving the whole valley, so a slow vehicle ahead sets the pace for everyone behind it.
Cluses is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Avoriaz takes 40 to 55 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
