The drive leaves Grenoble Airport on the D1091 up the Romanche valley and over the Col du Lautaret to Briançon. Briançon is the hub for both the Serre Chevalier valley and the Montgenèvre pass, so traffic for the whole Briançonnais converges on the town before splitting.
Briançon is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. From there the N94 climbs to the pass at Montgenèvre, which takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.

Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. The Col du Lautaret is kept open through the winter but is genuinely high at 2,058 m and closes for short periods during heavy snowfall.
