The Grenoble Airport to Zermatt route in detail

The drive leaves Grenoble Alpes–Isère on the A48 and A41 north through Chambéry and Annecy, crossing into Switzerland at Bardonnex. The A1 then skirts Geneva and follows Lake Geneva to Villeneuve, where the A9 turns inland up the Rhône valley.

Grenoble is the furthest of our three French airports from the Valais, but the route is motorway almost end to end and the timing holds up well. The two places it can slow are the Bardonnex border crossing and the Geneva ring on peak Saturdays.

The last stage leaves the A9 at Visp and climbs the Mattertal, the long valley that ends under the Matterhorn. Zermatt is car-free. The road ends at Täsch, 5 km short of the resort, and we drop you at Täsch railway station, where the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn shuttle runs up to Zermatt in about 12 minutes and leaves every 20 minutes through the day. There is no road access beyond Täsch for any vehicle — this is Zermatt law, not our limitation, and it applies to every transfer company.

Why fly to Grenoble Airport for a Swiss resort?

Geneva is the obvious airport for the Valais, and geographically it is the closest. But it is not always the cheapest or the most convenient. Flights into Grenoble Alpes–Isère Airport (GNB) are often better priced, the schedules suit some UK and northern European departure airports better, and the arrivals hall is a great deal calmer on a February Saturday than Geneva’s is.

Where exactly do you drop me in Zermatt?

We drop you at Täsch railway station, 5 km before Zermatt. Zermatt does not allow cars, so no vehicle of any kind can go further. From Täsch the shuttle train reaches Zermatt in about 12 minutes and runs every 20 minutes. There are luggage trolleys on the platform and porters from most Zermatt hotels meet the train if you arrange it with them.
