The Chambéry Airport to Saas-Fee route in detail

The drive leaves Chambéry–Savoie Mont Blanc on the A41 north through Annecy and crosses into Switzerland at Bardonnex, south of Geneva. The A1 skirts the city and runs along Lake Geneva to Villeneuve, where the A9 turns inland and climbs the Rhône valley.

Chambéry is the closest of our three French airports to the Valais, which makes it the cheapest French departure point for a Swiss resort. The route is motorway almost the whole way; the Bardonnex border crossing and the Geneva ring are the two places it can slow on a peak Saturday.

The last stage leaves the A9 at Visp and climbs the Saastal, the valley that runs parallel to the Mattertal one ridge to the east. Saas-Fee is car-free. Vehicles stop at the village entrance car park at the top of the approach road, which is where every arrival is dropped. From there it is a short walk into the village, and electric taxis and luggage trolleys serve the hotels. As in Zermatt, this is a resort rule that applies to every vehicle.

Why fly to Chambéry Airport for a Swiss resort?
