The drive leaves Geneva Airport and runs east along the south shore of Lake Geneva to Thonon-les-Bains, where it turns off onto the D902. From Thonon the D902 climbs into the Vallée d’Abondance, through Abondance and La Chapelle-d’Abondance. It is a single mountain road serving the whole valley, so a slow vehicle ahead sets the pace for everyone behind it.
Thonon-les-Bains is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Châtel takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
Winter driving on this route
Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory.
