The Grenoble Airport to Les Houches route in detail
The drive leaves Grenoble Airport on the A48 and A43 towards Chambéry, then the A41 north past Annecy and on to the A40, which runs up the Arve valley through Cluses and Sallanches. The A40 is the only motorway into this valley, so peak-Saturday traffic has nowhere else to disperse to and the queue builds on the motorway itself rather than in a town.
The motorway ends at Le Fayet, below Passy, and from that exit the N205 carries on up the valley to Les Houches — the first village of the Chamonix valley, about 6 km before Chamonix itself. There is no pass and no tunnel on the way in; the Mont Blanc tunnel lies beyond Chamonix, further up the valley. The last stretch from Le Fayet takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions, a steady valley climb rather than a hairpin road, and it is where snow slows traffic first.
Winter driving on this route
Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. Our vehicles run on winter tyres with chains carried as standard, so the driver fits them where the road demands it instead of joining the queue at the foot of the climb.
The A40 and the N205 are cleared and gritted continuously and the valley road into Les Houches is kept open through the winter, though the motorway limit drops from 130 km/h to 110 and, in poor visibility, to 90 or 70. The roads that close around here are the Col des Montets above Argentière, on the way towards Switzerland, and the Col des Aravis towards La Clusaz — neither is on the route to Les Houches. Satellite navigation will occasionally offer one of them as a shortcut, and drivers who run these roads daily do not follow a screen into a closed col.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the transfer from Grenoble Airport to Les Houches?
Around 2h 7min for 217 km in normal conditions. Allow longer on peak Saturdays and in heavy snow, when the mountain section slows considerably.
How much does a transfer from Grenoble Airport to Les Houches cost?
From €291 for a private vehicle carrying up to 8 passengers — €36.38 per person when the vehicle is full. That is the weekday rate; Saturday and peak dates are priced higher. The price is calculated on the real road distance to your exact address — get your exact quote in 2 minutes.
Do I need snow chains for a transfer to Les Houches?
Not for our transfers — the vehicle is already equipped. Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. We carry chains on every winter transfer and the driver fits them when the road requires it.
Why does the route go through Sallanches?
Because there is no way around it. Sallanches is the gateway to this valley, and every vehicle heading to Les Houches passes through it. It is also where peak-Saturday traffic concentrates.
Is the transfer private?
Yes. The vehicle is yours alone, door to door, with no shared stops and no waiting for other passengers to arrive.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Your flight is tracked and the driver adjusts to the actual landing time, at no extra charge. You do not need to rebook or call ahead.
