A private airport transfer is the simplest way to reach your Alpine accommodation: one fixed price agreed before you travel, a driver who meets you in arrivals, and a direct door-to-door journey with no changes. This guide covers the four gateway airports, how pricing works, what to expect on the day, and when to book — with links to every live route.
The gateway airports
- Geneva (GVA) — the busiest gateway for the French Alps, with fast access to Chamonix, the Portes du Soleil and the Tarentaise. See Geneva to Chamonix and other Geneva routes.
- Chambéry (CMF) — the closest airport to the Tarentaise and Three Valleys; a shorter drive to Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens.
- Grenoble (GNB) and Lyon (LYS) — useful alternatives for the Southern Alps, Alpe d’Huez, and whenever Geneva is fully booked or weather-affected.
- Turin (TRN) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) — the Italian-side gateways for Cervinia, Courmayeur, La Thuile and Sestriere.
Which airport is closest to your resort?
Short answer: Chambéry is the closest airport to the Tarentaise and the Three Valleys, Geneva is the closest to Chamonix, Megève and the Portes du Soleil, and Grenoble is the closest to Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes. Geneva has the widest choice of flights, which is why most skiers still land there; Chambéry has few flights, mostly at winter weekends.

Geneva or Lyon for Val Thorens and Courchevel?
The drive is almost the same: Val Thorens is 2h 30 from Geneva and 2h 30 from Lyon; Courchevel is 2h 15 from Geneva and 2h 20 from Lyon. The transfer is cheaper from Geneva – Val Thorens from €237 (≈ £204) against from €290 (≈ £250) from Lyon – so choose Lyon only when the flight saves you more than the difference, or when the flight times suit you better. If you can find a flight into Chambéry, it beats both: 1h 40 to Val Thorens, from €206 (≈ £177).
What is the closest airport to the French Alps?
It depends on the valley. For the big Tarentaise resorts (Val Thorens, Courchevel, Méribel, Tignes, Val d’Isère, Les Arcs, La Plagne) it is Chambéry, about 1h 25–1h 45 away. For Chamonix, Megève and Morzine it is Geneva, 1h 15–1h 31. For Alpe d’Huez and Les Deux Alpes it is Grenoble, 1h 05–1h 15.

How transfer pricing works
A reputable Alpine operator quotes a fixed, all-inclusive price per vehicle — not per person and not on a meter. The quote is based on the route and vehicle size, and it does not change if your flight is delayed or traffic is heavy. That means tolls, tunnel fees (such as the Mont Blanc tunnel) and airport parking are already included. Always confirm the price covers the full journey door to door before you book, and get a written quote so there are no surprises on arrival.
Private transfer vs the alternatives
Trains and public shuttles are cheaper but slow, with changes and fixed timetables that rarely suit a late arrival with luggage. Local taxis can work for short hops but seldom offer a fixed Alpine fare. A private transfer is booked for your group alone and is usually the best value once you account for time, luggage and a guaranteed pickup. What to expect on the day
- Meet and greet: your driver tracks your flight and waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, so a delay is not a problem.
- Luggage and equipment: tell the operator about skis, snowboards, a pushchair or extra bags so the right vehicle is sent.

When to book
Book as early as you can for peak-season Saturdays, school holidays and New Year — these are the busiest transfer days and the best vehicles fill first. Midweek and summer transfers can usually be arranged at shorter notice, but booking ahead still secures your preferred vehicle and price.
