The Geneva Airport to Vaujany route in detail
The drive leaves Geneva Airport on the A41 south past Chambéry and Grenoble, then the D1091 up the Romanche valley. At Rochetaillée, a few kilometres short of Le Bourg-d’Oisans, the D526 turns off north up the Eau d’Olle valley, past the Lac du Verney and Allemont, to Vaujany. Traffic for the whole Oisans area shares the Romanche road as far as that junction before splitting.
Rochetaillée is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Vaujany takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
Winter driving on this route
Under the Loi Montagne, vehicles travelling to French Alpine resorts must carry winter tyres or snow chains between 1 November and 31 March. This is enforced, not advisory. The D526 above Allemont is narrow, climbs steadily to the village and holds snow long after the valley road is clear. It is continuous exposed altitude gain, which is why winter equipment is checked rather than assumed. Satellite navigation will sometimes route over cols that are closed all winter — the Col de la Madeleine, Col de l’Iseran and Cormet de Roselend among them, and closer to hand the Col du Glandon and Col de la Croix de Fer at the head of this valley. Drivers who run these roads daily do not follow a screen into them.
