The drive leaves Geneva Airport on the A41 and A43 south through the Maurienne to Modane, then crosses into Italy through the Fréjus tunnel and returns to France over the Montgenèvre pass into Briançon. From Briançon the N94 runs south down the Durance valley through Guillestre to Embrun.
Embrun is where the valley road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there through Baratier up to Les Orres on the D40 takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
