The Geneva Airport to Montgenèvre route in detail
The drive leaves Geneva Airport on the A41 and A43 south through the Maurienne, then the Fréjus tunnel. On the Italian side the road drops down the Susa valley to Oulx and turns back up through Cesana Torinese and Clavière to the border, with Montgenèvre a short distance beyond it on the French side of the pass. Briançon, another twelve kilometres down the far side, is the hub for the whole Briançonnais.
Cesana Torinese is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The climb from there up to Montgenèvre takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a winding ascent that gains altitude the whole way, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
The winter routing crosses into Italy through the Fréjus tunnel and returns to France over the Montgenèvre pass, because the direct French road over the Col du Galibier is closed from late October until late May. Carry a passport or national ID card. The tunnel toll is included in the price quoted.
