On the Italian side the road drops down the Susa valley to Oulx and turns back up through Cesana Torinese to the Montgenèvre pass and Briançon. Briançon is the hub for both the Serre Chevalier valley and the Montgenèvre pass, so traffic for the whole Briançonnais converges on the town before splitting.
Briançon is where the fast road ends and the mountain section begins. The run from there up the Guisane valley to Serre Chevalier takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions — a steady climb through Chantemerle and Villeneuve-la-Salle, and the part of the journey where knowing the road actually matters.
